#Discover

Fage-Montivernoux, located at the foot of the eponymous Puech (1,280 m), owes its name to the beech forest (“fagus” in Latin). Formerly a priory of the Aubrac priory, the original village was located at Font-Clauso. According to legend, a salamander poisoned a fountain, causing the death of the inhabitants. The church, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles, has a semi-circular apse, a barrel-vaulted nave, and a bell gable with four openings.

A piece of history

Fage-Montivernoux, nestled at the foot of the Puech mountain, is a village steeped in history. Formerly a priory of the Aubrac priory, it has evolved from its original location, Font-Clauso, 3 km from the present-day village. Local legend tells of a salamander poisoning the fountain, leading to the death of the inhabitants of the original village.

The church of La Fage-Montivernoux is a striking example of the region’s religious architecture. Its semi-circular apse and barrel-vaulted nave reflect Romanesque art, while its Gothic portal and four-bay bell tower illustrate more recent influences. This architectural heritage bears witness to the village’s rich history and its role within the Aubrac region.

exploring the village

  • The 44 wrought iron and granite crosses: Scattered throughout the commune, these crosses have been erected since the 3rd century. Despite their destruction during the French Revolution, they reappeared in the 19th century. These crosses serve as landmarks for pilgrims, bless the land, and offer spiritual protection to the inhabitants. They remain important places of worship.

The Saint John the Baptist Cross: Located on the edge of the road leading to Grandviala, this granite cross is considered the most beautiful in the commune. It bears a sculpted Christ, which, although marked by time, retains great expressiveness.

The Oratory Cross: Dedicated to Our Lady, this cross is located in the village of Anglars. It probably dates from 1875-1880, a time when small grottoes were beginning to be created to commemorate the apparitions of Lourdes.
