The scarcrow of Rimeizenc

When Denise and Maurice transform everyday objects into poetic works

In the village of Rimeizenc, in the commune of Fau-de-Peyre, Denise and Maurice Chalvet-Gladine have created a unique world: more than 300 scarecrows, each one unique, born from their imagination and passion. An unusual and poetic place that attracts many visitors to the Aubrac region every year.

A poetic and unusual universe

In the village of Rimeizenc, in the commune of Fau-de-Peyre, Denise and Maurice Chalvet-Gladine have chosen a retirement unlike any other. For several years, they have devoted themselves to creating scarecrows, giving free rein to their imagination and inventiveness.

The adventure began in a very pragmatic way: a sparrowhawk had attacked a hen, and a way had to be found to scare it away. From this situation was born an exceptional collection: more than 300 scarecrows, all different, recognizable thanks to their costumes, accessories, and surprising details.

Surprising creations

Each piece is unique. The artists use yogurt pots, beer bottle caps, candle holders, and other everyday objects to create astonishing characters. On their property and inside their studio, visitors discover these strange and fascinating creatures, all arranged to surprise and amaze.

A friendly visit

Denise and Maurice warmly welcome their visitors and readily share their story. Maurice cuts the wood, while Denise paints, dresses, and personalizes each scarecrow. And to enhance the visit, Maurice might even play a little tune on the harmonica, adding a musical dimension to this unique museum.

Over the years, the exhibition has grown and attracted an ever-increasing audience. These creations demonstrate the artistic side of a rural area, far removed from modern society, and the couple’s ability to transform everyday objects into works of art.
