The Aubrac line—one of Europe’s most scenic railway routes—winds through magnificent landscapes, including the Grands Causses, the Lot region, the Margeride, the Aubrac plateau, and the volcanoes of Auvergne. Its construction was a monumental challenge, and efforts to preserve it continue to rally railway workers, local residents, elected officials, and associations, given the vulnerability of the Massif Central’s minor rail lines. Spanning 277 km between the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Occitanie regions, the line features 83 tunnels and viaducts, including the famous Garabit Viaduct—an Eiffel masterpiece towering 122 meters above the Truyère Gorges.
Today, a single passenger train runs daily along the entire line in both directions between Paris and Béziers. This service is supplemented by regional trains (TER). The Aubrac Train connects Béziers and Clermont-Ferrand daily—with connections available from Paris and Montpellier—offering a unique journey through remote villages and breathtaking scenery. Tourist shuttle buses crisscross the Lozère region from early July to late August. Leave your car behind for a day—or longer—and make the most of your outings. Whether on foot, by bike, or on the water, a multitude of activities await you along the shuttle route. So… ready to hop aboard? Practical information: – The vehicles are equipped to carry bicycles without a prior reservation (reservations are only required the day before if transporting more than 5 bikes). – The route can also be traveled in the direction of Nasbinals → Marvejols → Mende. Aumont-Aubrac station is no longer in service. Consequently, it is not possible to purchase or collect tickets there, as there are no ticket machines on site. While waiting for your train, you can take a break at the nearby *Re’Peyre*, which offers a selection of gourmet groceries, cheeses, cured meats, snacks, and coffee.
