Perched on a basalt outcrop, the Château de Calmont d’Olt overlooks Espalion and the Lot Valley. A true sentinel of Rouergue, it invites young and old to experience an exciting immersion in the medieval world, with self-guided tours, medieval games, spectacular entertainment and exceptional panoramas.

27 An iconic fortress

     Dominating the Lot Valley, the Aubrac plateau, and the Causses limestone plateaus, the fortified castle of Calmont d’Olt is one of the major witnesses to medieval history in Rouergue. Occupied for over 5,000 years, the site reveals a long history of human presence, confirmed by prehistoric remains discovered there. Mentioned as early as the 9th century, the castle became one of the oldest baronies in Rouergue. Its construction began in the 11th century and evolved over the centuries to adapt to advancements in siege warfare, particularly during the Hundred Years’ War.

     Today, the Château de Calmont d’Olt is more than just a ruin. It offers a truly immersive medieval experience, punctuated by daily activities during the season. Visitors discover the defensive architecture, the siege engines, and daily life in the time of knights. Impressive demonstrations punctuate the visit: trebuchet firing, cannon fire, archery, and presentations of medieval crafts. Each activity makes history accessible and captivating.

      The site gives special attention to children. Thanks to medieval games and the Knight’s Trail, younger visitors can explore the castle interactively. The reward: a calligraphed diploma, a unique souvenir of their adventure. Finally, the exhibition of authentic armor and equipment completes the experience.
