Saint-Laurent-de-Veyrès, a small village in the Bédaule valley, offers a peaceful setting in the heart of beech woods. Formerly a separate parish in 1826, it boasts a 13th-century Romanesque church, as well as well-preserved vernacular heritage, including a communal oven and a granite fountain.

A bit of history

Saint-Laurent-de-Veyrès, a small, picturesque village in Lozère, was separated from La Fage-Montivernoux in 1826, becoming a “small parish.” Since then, the village’s history has been enriched by many remarkable features. The 13th-century church of Saint-Laurent is a striking example of Romanesque architecture. It once belonged to the episcopal estate, a landed domain intended for the bishop’s upkeep. Its Gothic portal, pointed barrel vaults, and semi-dome apse all bear witness to its rich historical past. Furthermore, the village preserves several vestiges of its vernacular heritage. Among these are the communal oven of Veyrès, a granite fountain, and a house dating from 1791. These features make Saint-Laurent-de-Veyrès a must-see for history buffs and those interested in local culture in Lozère.

exploring the village

  • The restored communal oven. This meticulously restored traditional oven is a living testament to the village’s ancient skills. It recalls the time when the women kneaded bread in “pasteires” (dough baskets), while the men took care of baking, once or twice a week. Today, this oven serves as a meeting place and is fired up for local festivals. It is also used for demonstrations, allowing visitors to experience this ancestral tradition.
The old granite bridge. This old bridge, built with granite slabs, is another essential element of Saint-Laurent-de-Veyrès’ heritage. It testifies to the ingenuity and solidity of local architecture.
