Village of Marchastel

#Discover

Marchastel is a small village on the Aubrac plateau in Lozère, perched at an altitude of over 1,200 meters. It is surrounded by vast pastures, glacial lakes, and wild landscapes. Peace and quiet reign here, and nature is ever-present. Far from major roads, Marchastel charms visitors with its unspoiled setting, tranquil atmosphere, and rich history. It is also a popular stop for hikers, particularly those on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago).

A bit of history

Marchastel has a very long history. As early as Antiquity, a Roman road linking Toulouse to Lyon crossed the region. The area around Lake Saint-Andéol was already a popular place of worship.

Later, in the Middle Ages, Marchastel lay on the border between two powerful territories: the Aubrac region and the Peyre region. The territory included several villages that have since disappeared, likely abandoned due to epidemics or wars.

Until the 19th century, the village lived in relative self-sufficiency. The economy was based on livestock farming, cereal cultivation, and the collective management of land and pastures.
