village of chauchailles
#Discover
Chauchailles is situated on the heights of the Aubrac plateau, offering a typical mountain environment. Thanks to its mountain climate, several streams, including the Bès and the Rouanel, flow through the commune. Furthermore, its territory boasts exceptional natural heritage. Indeed, two areas of ecological, faunal, and floral interest add to the richness of this place.
a bit of history
The history of Chauchailles is strongly influenced by its rural and mountainous environment. As in many villages of the Aubrac region, its development was long based on agriculture and livestock farming. The population reached its peak in the 18th century. However, it gradually declined over the decades. This decline reflects the economic and social transformations that have marked the region. Today, Chauchailles remains a peaceful village, rich in its natural heritage and rural traditions.
exploring the village
The Rocher du Cheylaret: This volcanic islet rises to an altitude of 1,128 meters and overlooks the surrounding landscape. A panoramic viewpoint indicator at the summit offers a 360° view of the Aubrac plateau and the neighboring mountain ranges.
The Church of Saint-Hippolyte: Mentioned in the archives as early as 1207, it was destroyed by fire in 1899. It was subsequently rebuilt using the same stones, thus preserving its original character. Its granite facade and bell tower with three bays, surmounted by a fourth, give it a striking silhouette.
The Monstrance Cross: Adorned with floral motifs, this cross bears the date 1787 twice, engraved on the cross itself and on its stone pedestal. The inscription “Haec zelo patoris” (This is the place where the church is built) is also visible, a sign of the pride of its patron. It was restored in 1823, which testifies to its heritage importance for the village.
