Village of Brion

#Discover

Brion is a charming village located in the northwest of the Lozère department, in the Occitanie region. Nestled on the Aubrac plateau, the village enjoys a mountain climate and a rich network of waterways, including the Bès river and several streams. Part of the Aubrac Regional Natural Park, Brion is distinguished by its exceptional natural heritage, with a Natura 2000 site and six protected areas of ecological interest.

A bit of history

Brion likely derives its name from a Celtic term, Brigo-Dunon, meaning “mountain fortress.” This origin is reminiscent of Lugo-Dunon, the ancient name for Lyon.

Furthermore, in the 18th century, Brion was raised to a marquisate. This distinction then encompassed the estates of Roc, Mas, Ussels, and Reyrac. The marquisate was granted to Géraud-Pierre de Michel du Roc (1708-1792), the elder uncle of General Duroc, Napoleon’s famous companion. Duroc thus became Duke of Friuli under the Empire.
