Village of Prinsuejols

#Discover

Prinsuéjols is a high-altitude village nestled on the Aubrac plateau. Formerly a priory, it preserves a heritage steeped in history—shaped by local lore, faith, and resistance. Despite its isolation, the village has been the site of significant events, particularly during the French Revolution. On January 1, 2017, Prinsuéjols merged with Malbouzon; together, they now form the new municipality of Prinsuéjols-Malbouzon, within which Prinsuéjols serves as a delegated municipality.

A bit of history

During the Revolution, several residents of Prinsuéjols fell victim to reprisals, despite the village’s isolated location. Old Shepherd Couve, from the hamlet of Pratviala, was conscripted and subsequently hunted down. He attempted to escape under cover of darkness, but his wooden clogs struck sparks against the stones, and he was killed. Pierre Gibelin, from Le Py, recruited men for the Christian and Royal Army of the South; he was guillotined in Mende in 1793. Janvier Savel, a fugitive Capuchin friar, was captured and executed in Mende in 1794. Abbé Rieutord, the parish priest of Prinsuéjols from 1787 to 1828, escaped death. Later, a native of Finieyrols became a bishop in Peru after surviving World War II internment camps. A stele commemorates his journey along the Way of Saint James. In the summer of 2020, a cross was unveiled at the edge of Finieyrols to ensure the past is not forgotten.
