Discovering the bison

Prehistoric animals in the heart of the forests of Lozère

In the heart of the Margeride region, the Sainte-Eulalie European Bison Reserve offers a unique opportunity to encounter one of Europe’s largest land mammals. Reintroduced to Lozère, the bison now live in a semi-wild state across more than 200 hectares, providing visitors with an authentic, nature-friendly experience—whether by horse-drawn carriage in summer or sleigh in winter.

The return of the bison to Margeride

Having vanished from the wild after World War I, the European bison was saved thanks to a reintroduction program launched in the 20th century. In 1991, nine bison from Poland were released in Sainte-Eulalie. Today, the reserve plays an active role in preserving this iconic species and maintaining the balance of forest ecosystems. A calm yet impressive animal, it lives in small herds and feeds primarily on grass, leaves, and bark within the vast forests of the Margeride.
