From the Cabrette to Bagpipes
The journey began in 2014, sparked by the meeting of André Raynal and André Ricros. Together, they founded the *Maison de la Cabrette et des Traditions de l’Aubrac* with a clear ambition: to trace the history of the *cabrette*, the region’s iconic bagpipe. Over the years, the museum has expanded. Instruments from all corners of the globe have gradually been added to the collection. Today, the site houses an exceptional collection—now a global benchmark—that showcases the cultural and musical diversity of the bagpipe.
The museum visit
The visit is structured around a five-stage route that is accessible to everyone. First, you discover the musical traditions of the Massif Central and the history of the *cabrette*. Next, you encounter a unique collection of bagpipes from around the world, reflecting the cultures that shaped them. Then, a recreation of a 19th-century *cabrette* maker’s workshop immerses you in the art of traditional craftsmanship. The tour continues with festive music, where the *cabrette* engages in a musical dialogue with the hurdy-gurdy, violin, and accordion. Finally, the current temporary exhibition, “Soundscape of an Aubrac Child,” offers an evocative immersion into the sounds of childhood and nature on the plateau.
