A bit of history
Arzenc-d’Apcher, perched on a promontory overlooking the Bès gorges, was once a strategic stronghold of the Barony of Apcher, protecting the region from the Counts of Rodez. The castle, built in the 12th century and mentioned as early as 1256, is now in ruins, with a 16th-century tower still visible. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the former castle chapel, harmoniously blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. In addition to its historical heritage, the village is rich in folklore. Two local legends stand out: “Lou roc de la Brouziduro,” the tragedy of a young girl, and “Lou Pas del Nobi,” recounting the drowning of a young groom in the Bès. Thus, Arzenc-d’Apcher is a village where history and mystery intertwine.
