Javols, capital of the Gabales

When Anderitum was the heart of Gallic Lozère

The peaceful village of Javols was once Anderitum, the capital of the Gabales. This Gallic people, neighbors of the Arverni, is known from the writings of Julius Caesar in *The Gallic Wars*. Their territory roughly corresponded to present-day Lozère, making the Gabales the Gallic ancestors of the inhabitants of Lozère.

A unique archaeological site

A true guardian of Roman-era remains, the Javols archaeological site preserves the traces of Anderitum, a major urban center of the 2nd century. Capital of the Gabali tribe, the city covered 40 hectares at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters.

During your visit, discover the emblematic sites of this exceptional location: Anderitum and its residential, commercial, and artisan quarters, as well as the public buildings that structured the city, such as the forum, the baths, and the theater.

A playful museum

The museum houses nearly 700 exceptional pieces, offering an immersive experience through authentic archaeological artifacts. As you wander through the collections, explore five centuries of history.

Thanks to multimedia tools, interactive displays, and facsimiles, the museum offers a true encounter with the Gabali. During a guided tour of the archaeological site, step back in time and delve into the past.

Finally, immerse yourself in the heart of the Roman capital with virtual reality headsets. These experiences offer iconic views of the city and reveal the history of its inhabitants.

Un site archéologique unique

Designed as a human-scale museum, the site offers an accessible exploration of the lives of the Gabali and the work of an archaeologist. Archaeological objects, ancient crafts, tactile reproductions, multimedia tools, games, and investigations punctuate the visit and encourage learning.

Throughout the tour, explore Romanization through the remains of daily life, discover the work of the archaeologist, and ask yourself: What was a Roman city? What secrets do the exhibited objects reveal?

Educational workshops are offered and adapted to different school levels.
